First, you need to sort the wood pallets by size. 3' by 4' is a common size, but they do come in all sizes and shapes. The people you are selling your pallets to will expect them by size, or perhaps only want a specific size, so having them sorted will be a big help.
Second, once you have them sorted, you need to repair any broken ones. Here's where you need a good pair of gloves, a hammer, and some nails at your disposal. When you are first starting, you should pick out the wood pallets that are in the worst shape, and take them apart. Chances are that some of the slats and pieces are perfectly acceptable.
Find the pallets that only need one or two replacement pieces, and use these to repair them. Most wood pallets are made of hardwood, like oak, so you may need a drill to create a pilot hole before attempting to nail in the repairs.
